Elizabeth and Thorndyke Thorndyke, a photogenic and an affectionate male Golden Retriever, was a former Guide Dog of America puppy in training. Born on June 14, 2002, and puppyraised by Elizabeth and Lewis, Thorndyke returned to the guide dog school for his intensive coursework at the age of 16 months. As Thorndyke is an intelligent animal, he immediately decided the life of a working guide involved too much work and not nearly enough love and admiration. Returning to his puppyraiser family, he became a "literacy dog" visiting local elementary schools, teacher training programs and library programs in the Riverside area where everyone is able to love and pet him. Thorndyke is a certified Delta Society therapy dog as well as a Reading Education Assistance Dog with Intermountain Therapy Animals. Thorndyke is quite happy with his career change choice of work, receiving hugs, attention and the admiration of his many friends. Since Feb. 2006, Thorndyke has visited patients at Riverside
Kaiser Permanente Hospital, participated one Saturday a month at the Upland
Library PawPals for Children, attended Reading classes at Riverside
Community College for the Workforce Preparation and the Gateway Early
College High School Charter School, Riverside campus. Thorndyke made his
debut at B.A.R.K. Program [Be A Reading Kid] at the Casa Blanca Library and
Learning Center in August, 2007, and will be continuing in that capacity on a
monthly basis. Thorndyke also makes unscheduled visits to area convalescent
homes and will soon be a part of the Visiting Nurses of Riverside County
Animal Therapy Program. |
